The 14th branch of the New York Public Library celebrated its grand opening today in Staten Island. The first Net Zero high performance public library in New York City, The Charleston Branch is a 10,000 square foot facility designed to meet the City’s goals of reducing 80% of its carbon emissions by 2050. The new library also provides educational programming and services to the underserved community of Charleston, Staten Island – a community that previously did not have access to a public library. The $17-million project, designed by ikon.5 architects, was managed by NYCEDC in partnership with Gilbane Building Company.

The Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center was named the most beautifully designed museum in the State of New Jersey by Architectural Digest. The Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center honors the legacy of an American icon and applies the life lessons of Yogi Berra, the New York Yankees, and baseball to teach and promote sportsmanship, social justice, and the pursuit of excellence. ikon.5 architects renovated the existing facility and created a new addition that serves as a flexible gallery space, used for exhibition display, receptions, book signings, and pre-function events. The reimagined facility transforms the overall appearance of the learning center by using glass to transparently communicate and initiate the visitor’s experience to the mission of the museum. Adjacent to a minor league baseball park, the museum is a jewel box displaying the virtues of America’s favorite pastime.

A jury chaired by ikon.5 design principal, Joseph Tattoni, FAIA convened at ikon.5’s studio for a daylong judging session, pouring over scores of entries and ultimately selecting 23 projects in seven categories to receive awards: Design, Residential, Unbuilt, Sustainability, Interior Architecture, Historic Preservation, and Adaptive Reuse. Four student projects were also recognized.

The Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) has selected three projects designed by ikon.5 architects to receive national Excellence Awards in architecture. A total of fifty-eight projects from thirty five architecture firms in the United States were recognized by SARA this year with awards in three categories: excellence, merit and honor. The awards were presented at a ceremony held October 16th in Coconut Grove, Florida held in conjunction with the SARA’s 59th National Conference.

More than 300 community leaders, college officials and guests came out Friday to celebrate the official opening of Towson University’s new Academic Center at Harford Community College (HCC). Designed by Princeton, NJ-based based ikon.5 architects, the 55,000 square foot three-story building, to be known as Towson University in Northeast Maryland, provides a 2+2 education for Harford students, allowing them to complete a four-year Towson University degree on Harford’s campus. . Programs of study offered at the new facility include business administration, elementary education, nursing, family & human services, information technology, psychology, sociology, and criminal justice. And more are expected to be added.

Ourso College of Business at Louisiana State University has been awarded two prestigious honors from the AIA Baton Rouge, a Silver Rose Award, and from the American Institute of Architects Louisiana, an Award of Merit. ikon.5 architects and Coleman Partners Architects created a joint venture to design the 167,000 square feet business school that opened in March, 2012. The awards were presented at the Louisiana AIA state convention in August, 2013.

American Builders Quarterly has named Kirkwood Public Library the Project of the Year. The first facility of its kind in the country, Barrett Honors Residential College houses 1,700 of Barrett's 2,700 honors college students.
