Conceived as a porous coral stone along the Tampa Bay shoreline.

Located at a prominent intersection where downtown St. Petersburg meets the University of South Florida, Pippenger Hall for the Tiedemann College of Business is conceived as an athenaeum for business scholars. Presenting as a monumental glass arch to the city, the building is both a symbolic and physical gateway to the University’s “Bay Campus” and Bayboro Harbor beyond.
Taking inspiration from its Tampa Bay setting and the indigenous coral stone of the region, the structure is rendered as a porous vessel with openings carved out of its volume to house various program elements while allowing sunlight and greenery to reach the building’s core. The entry’s Palm Court, Scholar’s Garden, and Business Commons all support casual learning and encourage productive collisions between students and faculty as they move through the building.

Glass façade creates a three-dimensional illusion of depth that recalls the texture of regional coral stone.
A circular pattern embedded in the building’s high-performance glass façade creates a three-dimensional illusion of depth that metaphorically recalls the texture of regional coral stone. It contributes to the building’s iconic presence and is one of many biophilic and sustainable responses that achieves a LEED Gold certification.
