Conceived as a stylized brick vessel for information and community gathering.

The Charleston Branch of the New York Public Library is the first Net Zero high performance public library in New York City. Inspired by the cultural connections to its site in Charleston Staten Island, a century old craftsmen community known for brick and terracotta manufacturing, the Library is conceived as a stylized brick vessel for information and community gathering.

The exterior is clad in a textured Roman brick whose non-standard composition highlights and pays homage to the historic manufacturing traditions of this community. Located in a shopping complex, a familiar American suburban condition, the Library is bordered by parking lots and adjacent Fairview Park.

Our design addresses this unique site with a community plaza and entry portal off the parking lot that creates an active space between the parking area and building. Internally, the program spaces are oriented toward the park and take advantage of its views.

ikon.5 encourages the library to dream big - and through their ingenuity and skill they are able to deliver a brilliant design that not only responds to the library’s programmatic needs and budget requirements, but serves to elevate the environment with a civic presence where client, patron and community will all be proud stakeholders.
