McGee Art Pavilion selected as a finalist in Architzer’s ‘A+’ Global Awards Program

A prestigious jury panel of top architects from across the globe has selected the McGee Art Pavilion as a finalist in the cultural buildings category of the 2014 Architizer A+ Awards. Now in its second year, the Architizer A+ Awards are billed as “the definitive global architecture awards program with 60 plus categories and over 200 judges.”

The intimately-scaled McGee Art Pavilion is an art gallery and arts education center for the New York State College of Ceramics in Alfred New York. With its unique sculpted ceramic facade of unglazed terra cotta tubes inspired by the activities that go on within the building and its prime location on campus, at the intersection where the college meets the town, the building is both a beacon to the arts and a gateway to the campus that elevates this university’s brand while establishing it as a major player in the arts.

The building houses 19,000 square feet of flexible gallery and classroom space with a mezzanine gallery that overlooks a two story exhibition hall and connects to a black box space for total immersive display of video and audio art forms. The building is remarkably energy efficient, with many sustainable features, and is designed to achieve a LEED Silver rating with the United States Green Building Council.

Established in 2003 and located in Princeton, New Jersey, ikon.5 architects is headed by Joseph G. Tattoni, AIA, Arvind Tikku, and Charles Maira. In 2013, the firm was ranked 4th in Design in the United States by Architect magazine, the official journal of the American Institute of Architects.
